Design is only a small portion of what an architect does. We are also engineers and not all architectural design firms are equal. Make sure you work with an architect who is invested as much in the construction of your project as the design. Leaving the construction solely to the builder does not guarantee the best product. Remember builders, even the best ones are playing a balancing act between their reputation and the bottom line. If not directed otherwise, they will use the products and construction techniques that they prefer and best suite them. An architects primary responsibility to the client is to make sure that the completed project fulfills the expectations of all involved, starting with the client. A good architect helps manage all aspects of the design and construction of a project by being involved with everyone from the client to all parties participating in the design development, engineering, regulatory agency requirements, contractor(s), etc.
Take a look at a sampling of the drawings that should be part of any architects construction documents. This is how a builder knows what he is pricing and the materials they are expected to use throughout the construction.
